Though some modern critics find the film formulaic, Nine Months was a box office hit (grossing over $138 million worldwide) and remains a beloved time capsule of 90s rom-com sensibilities. Hugh Grant’s nervous energy is perfectly suited to the material, and Tom Arnold’s supporting performance earned genuine praise for its unexpected warmth and comedic timing.
Sam’s world is thrown into a tailspin when Rebecca breaks the news. Suddenly, the man who spends his days advising other people’s children is facing his worst nightmare: nine months of impending fatherhood. From panic attacks at toy stores to disastrous Lamaze classes, Sam’s attempts to embrace the future go hilariously wrong. Matters are complicated by the arrival of Rebecca’s overbearing, seen-it-all-before friend (Joan Cusack) and Sam’s sardonic best friend (Jeff Goldblum), who paints a grim picture of life after diapers.
Nine Months is a charming and hilarious romantic comedy from director Chris Columbus ( Mrs. Doubtfire , Home Alone ). Starring Hugh Grant in one of his signature bumbling-lead roles, the film follows Sam Faulkner, a successful San Francisco child psychologist who has absolutely no interest in having children of his own. His live-in girlfriend, Rebecca (a radiant Julianne Moore), shares his carefree lifestyle—until she discovers she’s pregnant.
As the due date approaches, Sam must decide whether to run from responsibility or step up to the one role he never prepared for.
Father of the Bride (1991), Mrs. Doubtfire , Parenthood , and anyone who appreciates lighthearted, anxiety-driven comedy about life’s biggest surprises.
