Maid in Sweden is less a coherent narrative and more a 1970s travelogue awkwardly fused with a “cautionary tale” for teenage girls. The film follows 16-year-old Lena (the iconic Christina Lindberg), a shy, bespectacled Stockholm schoolgirl who goes to spend a weekend in the countryside with her older sister’s chic, bohemian friends. Predictably (and problematically for modern viewers), her innocence is quickly shed as she’s introduced to free love, folk music, and an array of self-absorbed male suitors.
