For the points version: Timing is set to 18° BTDC at 3,000 rpm. But the manual tells you the trick: static timing (with a test light) gets you started, but dynamic timing (with a strobe light) reveals a worn advance mechanism. If the timing jumps erratically at 6,000 rpm, your crank seals are failing. This is not intuition
