She’d helped design the neural architecture of the first three units. The F-1 through F-3 had been beautiful failures: too empathetic, prone to hesitation in simulated hostage scenarios. The F-4 melted its own core rather than follow a lawful order to fire on civilians. That one had been quietly incinerated.

Chen hesitated. “Direct voice?”

“Run the diagnostic again,” Aris said.
