I recently got hit with a wave of nostalgia for Command & Conquer: Generals and Zero Hour . I dug out my original 2003 CD-ROMs, typed in the 20-digit serial key printed on the back of the manual, and was met with the infamous error: Avoid at all costs

This isn't a hacker stealing your key. This is a failure of legacy software. EA’s old DRM (Digital Rights Management) server for Generals is either long dead or so broken that it flags every key as "in use." It’s trying to phone home to a server that has effectively been unplugged for a decade.
