Once inside, Shivudu learns his true lineage: he is the son of Amarendra Baahubali, the rightful and beloved prince of Mahishmati. Through a series of flashbacks, the film reveals the noble, just, and heroic nature of Amarendra Baahubali, and how his cousin Bhallaladeva—with the help of his cunning father, Bijjaladeva—usurped the throne. The film ends on a massive cliffhanger: after helping Devasena escape, Shivudu faces Bhallaladeva, who taunts him with the question that became a cultural phenomenon: — implying that Shivudu’s own father was murdered by Bhallaladeva. But the “why” remains unanswered until the sequel.

Released in 2015, Baahubali: The Beginning is the first of two epic fantasy action films directed by S. S. Rajamouli. Produced in Telugu and Tamil, and dubbed into Hindi, Malayalam, and other languages, the film shattered box office records and became a pan-Indian phenomenon. The film opens with a baby being rescued and raised in a remote tribal village below a towering waterfall. The child, named Shivudu (later known as Mahendra Baahubali), grows into a fearless and kind-hearted young man. Obsessed with climbing the waterfall that separates his village from the outside world, he eventually succeeds and meets Avanthika, a fierce rebel warrior. Once inside, Shivudu learns his true lineage: he
