Warning: Installing this version on a modern Android (12+) requires disabling Play Protect, as the app uses an outdated API signature. Furthermore, the game will nag you about a "Failed to connect to Rovio servers" because the leaderboards (powered by a dead version of Crystal) no longer exist. Angry Birds Rio 1.4.4 is not the most polished version of the game. It lacks the later "Carnival Upheaval" levels and the final boss fight against Nigel. In later versions (1.5.0+), Rovio added hidden golden beachballs that unlocked secret levels. In 1.4.4, the collision data for these beachballs exists in the code (flagged as beachball_dummy ), but the textures and trigger zones are missing. Players who load their 1.4.4 save file into a newer version have reported that the beachballs spawn in impossible locations—inside solid geometry—proving that Rovio shifted the level architecture between these builds. Officially, you cannot. The Google Play Store and iOS App Store force-update apps to the final "Sunset" version (which removed the Rio 2 promotional content). However, the Android APK for 1.4.4 is widely preserved by the Angry Birds Modding Community .
